Job Description

Performs equipment operation in the collection and disposal of solid waste and yard debris from residential and commercial areas. Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment and may involve supervision of a small crew of employees. Must adhere to all traffic laws, ordinances, and the City of Reidsville Rules and Regulations. The employee in this position will also operate other solid waste equipment, as directed.
SALARY RANGE: $24,777-37,166

Job Duties

-Operates a city vehicle and collects waste and debris by driving assigned routes and to pick up solid waste, yard waste and recycled materials.
-Loads waste into collection vehicles.
-Transports waste for disposal.
-Performs a safe, economical and efficient operation of the equipment in the collection, transportation and disposal of refuse and recyclables; maneuvers around different directions and obstacles to get debris.
-Assures that banned materials from the landfill are not picked up; informs supervisor where banned items are located.
-Reads street maps and route sheets to locate route destinations.
-Adheres to City’s safety guidelines and regulations.
-Provides information within the area of assignment: subject to customer complaints and issues, requests for service, and inquires about solid waste collection service from the general public.
-Completes a daily route sheet.
-Maintains assigned vehicle and equipment in clean and mechanical working order.
-Performs related duties as required.

Required Qualifications

-Thorough knowledge in garbage collection and disposal.
-Considerable knowledge of the basic operation, maintenance and servicing of solid waste equipment.
-Thorough knowledge of City streets.
-Considerable knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances and rules and city procedures.
-General knowledge of the current trends and development related to municipal solid waste management and operations.
-General knowledge of the hazards, safety rules, procedures and regulations in solid waste equipment operation.
-Ability to apply applicable laws, codes, regulations.
-Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

-Valid NC Driver’s License Class C
-Commercial Driver’s license Class B
-Successful completion of a background check, pre-employment drug screen and physical. EOE

Preferred Qualifications

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent with considerable work experience operating heavy vehicles or equipment and disposing of waste and recycled materials; or equivalent of training and experience

Physical Demands

Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion lifting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally to complete tasks. An employee must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing. An employee must possess the visual acuity to be the operator of trucks, forklifts, cranes and other equipment. The employee is subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, vibration, oils, noise, exposure to heat and chemicals.
