Job Description

Performs specialized skilled work in the operation and routine maintenance of a 7.5 mgd Ludzack – Ettinger process activated sludge plant. Includes the operation of sludge conditioning and thickening equipment, mixed media filtration, sludge dewatering / disposal and effluent pumping.
Employment is subject to a variety of shifts including nights and weekends as well as emergency call-in.
SALARY RANGE: $27,317 – $40,976

Job Duties

1. Performs specialized tasks relating to the operation and routine maintenance of activated sludge process, conditioning and dewatering units, and denitrification filters.
2. Observes, records, and interprets readings at appropriate intervals as given by gauges, charts and other measuring devices and makes appropriate adjustments based on data.
3. Conducts the thickening of sludge by utilizing a process involving the addition of coagulants with the sludge to condition it as it runs through the Drum Thickener units. .
4. Performs thickening and dewatering tests on the sludge to determine the optimum concentration of chemical conditioners to feed.
5. Controls the addition of chemicals to the thickening and dewatering units.
6. Monitors the mixed media filter units to ensure proper operation occurs.
7. Takes samples and completes basic laboratory tests as required.
8. Reads, understands, and applies a variety of information obtained from resources such as technical operational and equipment manuals.
9. Maintains accurate records, utilizing shift logbooks and computer systems. Prepares special reports as required.
10. Operates and monitors equipment used in the wastewater treatment process to achieve maximum efficiency at the least possible cost.
11. Drives to work sites both within and outside the plant facilities.
12. Directs the work of lower graded operators and other personnel as assigned.
13. Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
14. Performs minor office administration tasks such as filing, faxing, etc.
15. Performs related work as required.

Required Qualifications

Any combination of education, training, and experience providing the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
a. Knowledge
Principles, procedures, methods, and equipment involved in wastewater treatment operations; industrial math as it relates to calculating flows, volumes, weights, etc.
b. Abilities
-Perform operational and routine maintenance duties required to operate activated sludge facilities, sludge thickening and dewatering of facilities and denitrification filters.
-Read and understand technical repair manuals.
-Observe and interpret gauges, charts, etc. based on data; act quickly and independently in operational emergencies.
-Maintain records, logs and prepare special reports; follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively verbally; deal effectively and courteously with associates and the general public; perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of others; model and promote acceptance and respect for differences among employees and citizens; perform effectively as a member of the team in carrying out the City’s stated mission and philosophy.
c. Experience, Education, and Training
-Directly related work experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
-A Valid NC Driver’s License is required
-Background Check, Pre-employment Drug Screen and Physical Required. EOE

Preferred Qualifications

A NC Class I Wastewater Operator’s Certificate is desirable or ability to obtain within 6 months.
-Two years of college or vocational technical training in wastewater technology, chemical or biological sciences or a related area and at least three years experience in an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant, or in a closely related area.

Physical Demands

Performs bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, crawling, and reaching both to ground level and overhead; lifts, carries, pushes and pulls up to 50 pounds; must be able to move about the plant to observe data and equipment; holds and grips objects; may be subject to standing for long periods of time; must be able to distinguish primary colors.
Both indoor and outdoor working environment with possible exposure to a variety of extreme weather conditions, constant and extreme noise; subject to a variety of mechanical, electrical, chemical, toxic waste, and other safety hazards associated with treatment plant facilities and equipment; possible exposure to disease, fumes, and strong odors as related to wastewater treatment operations.
